Year 6
Welcome to Autumn 1! We are excited for a new term of learning, exploring new books, history, science, and hands-on projects. We can’t wait to see pupils engage, create, and grow in all areas of their learning.
English
This term in English, we are exploring the picture book Way Home by Libby Hathorn. The story follows Shane as he makes his way through the city at night and helps us reflect on what “home” really means. Alongside reading, we will be developing our writing skills by focusing on descriptive language, imagery, powerful vocabulary, dialogue, and varied sentence structures. Pupils will also be using these techniques to plan and write their own narratives inspired by the story.
Through these tasks, pupils will be encouraged to write with confidence, creativity, and flair, drawing on everything they’ve learned so far.
Guided Reading
This term in Guided Reading, pupils will be reading Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. This gripping adventure story follows Michael, a boy who is washed up on a remote island, where he meets the mysterious Kensuke. As we read, pupils will be developing their comprehension skills by making predictions, exploring characters’ thoughts and feelings, discussing themes, and using evidence from the text to support their ideas.
Pupils should be reading at home everyday. We have a range of books, in the class and on Bug Club, that the pupils have access to. Please ensure that they are recording their reading in their reading journals. We will also be asking pupils to record interesting phrases and sentences from their reading that can be used in their writing.
Maths
This term in Maths, pupils will be developing their understanding of shape and space. We will be learning how to calculate area and perimeter, exploring volume, and deepening our knowledge of geometry. Alongside this, pupils will be taking part in daily Fluent in Five sessions to build confidence, speed, and accuracy in arithmetic.
Computing
This term in Computing, pupils will be learning about internet safety, focusing on how to use technology responsibly and protect themselves online. They will also be working with Lego WeDo, developing their skills in building, coding, and problem-solving through exciting hands-on projects.
Science
Light & Sight
This term in Science, pupils will be learning about light and sight. They will explore how light travels, how we see things, and how shadows and reflections are formed. Pupils will carry out investigations to develop their understanding and explain what they observe.
History
British History
This term in History, pupils will be exploring British history from the Tudors up to 1939. They will study the Tudors, Stuarts, and Victorian times, learning about key events, significant figures, and how society changed during these periods. Pupils will investigate how inventions, politics, and daily life shaped Britain and consider the impact of these changes on people’s lives.
DT
Structures
This term in Design & Technology, pupils will be learning about structures. They will explore different ways to make strong and stable frameworks and use these skills to design and build their own bird hides. Pupils will also evaluate their work and think of improvements as they go.
Pupils will also focus on selecting and joining materials carefully, testing their designs for strength and stability, and thinking creatively about how to make their bird hides both functional and visually appealing.
