Year 6
English
This term, Year 6 will be taking part in a range of creative writing tasks designed to spark their imagination and develop their descriptive skills. They will explore different genres and styles, focusing on using ambitious vocabulary, varied sentence structures, and powerful imagery to engage the reader.
Through these tasks, pupils will be encouraged to write with confidence, creativity, and flair, drawing on everything they’ve learned so far.
Guided Reading
This term, Year 6 will be focusing on reading for pleasure, exploring a variety of texts that spark curiosity, imagination, and enjoyment. They will have the chance to discuss characters, themes, and ideas, while developing their comprehension and inference skills through rich, engaging stories.
Year 6 will be encouraged to express opinions, make connections, and deepen their understanding of texts, all while discovering the joy that comes from getting lost in a good book.
Children should be reading at home everyday. We have a range of books, in the class and on Bug Club, that the children have access to. Please ensure that they are recording their reading in their reading journals. We will also be asking children to record interesting phrases and sentences from their reading that can be used in their writing.
Maths
This term, Year 6 will be recapping key maths skills to consolidate their learning and ensure they are ready for the transition to secondary school. They will revisit important topics such as number, calculation, fractions, geometry, and data handling, building fluency and confidence along the way.
Year 6 will also begin to explore some Year 7 content using IXL, giving them a head start as they prepare for the challenges ahead. This will help them apply their knowledge in new contexts and strengthen their problem-solving and reasoning skills.
Computing
This term, we ar]re combining our coding skills with maths investigations using Scratch! Year 6 will be creating and debugging algorithms to explore patterns, solve problems, and bring maths to life through coding.
Science
Evolution & Inhertance
This term, Year 6 will be learning about evolution and inheritance, exploring how living things have changed over time and how characteristics are passed down through generations. They will investigate fossils, variation, and adaptation, developing an understanding of how animals and plants have become suited to their environments.
Geography
Econimic and Trade
This term, Year 6 will be learning about economics and trade, exploring how goods and services are produced, bought, and sold around the world. They will investigate imports, exports, and the journey of everyday products from raw materials to shops, as well as the impact of global trade on people and the environment.
DT
Food Technology
This term in DT, Year 6 will be developing their food technology skills by learning how to make cookies! They will explore different ingredients, learn basic food preparation techniques, and follow a recipe to create their own delicious baked treats.
As part of the process, pupils will consider nutrition, hygiene, and food safety, as well as how to adapt a recipe to suit different tastes or dietary needs.
PE
P.E lessons will be on Tuesday. Please ensure that your child comes to school wearing their P:E kit.
