Reception

Reception Spring 1

Literacy

This term’s core text is “ Whatever Next” by Jill Murphy which will serve as the foundation for a diverse range of interactive and exploratory activities. Through close engagement with the text, children will develop a nuanced understanding of the story’s language and themes, enhancing their vocabulary and comprehension skills. They will explore the characters and settings, discussing key moments and making connections to their own experiences. The activities will include creative writing, role-playing, and art-based tasks, which will help children express their ideas and interpretations of the story in a variety of ways. The diverse activities designed around “Whatever Next” will also help develop important skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, and communication.

Math's:

This term, our focus will be on the exploration of key mathematical concepts, including counting, ordering numbers and addition. Throughout the term, children will be encouraged to use mathematical vocabulary and apply their learning to real-life scenarios. Through collaborative problem-solving, games, and activities, they will develop critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of these essential mathematical concepts.

Phonics:

We are continuing Phase 3 of our phonics program. The children will learn new sounds and read ELS (Essential Letters and Sounds) weekly allocated books. They will also take home sound-related reading books. Please ensure these books are looked after and returned to school daily. We encourage you to read with your child and provide feedback in their reading diary.

Science

During this term, the focus of our science lessons will be on space, providing children with an exciting opportunity to explore and learn about the wonders of the universe. This topic will engage their natural curiosity and spark their imagination, as they investigate various aspects of space, from the solar system to the stars and beyond. By the end of the term, children will have a basic understanding of space and its many fascinating elements. They will have gained knowledge about the planets, stars, and the Earth, Moon and Sun.

PE:

PE sessions will be held every Thursday. The children will engage in activities that develop essential team play skills, ball skills, and physical coordination. Please ensure your child wears an appropriate PE kit on Thursdays.

General message:

Please ensure children have spare clothes in their bags if they have an accident.

Please ensure that your children complete their homework over the weekend so they can be collected on Monday, as well as reading with a parent for ten minutes each day.
