Reception
Reception Autumn 1
Literacy
This term, our core text will be Lulu’s First Day. Through this story, children will explore themes of starting school, making friends, and building confidence in new environments. We will be developing early reading skills such as recognising sounds, joining in with repeated phrases, and beginning to blend letters. The children will also have opportunities for mark-making and early writing linked to the story, such as drawing and labelling, creating story maps, and beginning to write simple words and captions. We’ll encourage children to talk about their own experiences and make connections between the story and their own lives.
Math's:
In Maths, our focus will be on matching, sorting, ordering, patterns, and counting. Children will practise comparing objects by size, colour, and shape, and begin to use mathematical language such as bigger/smaller, more/less, and first/last. We will explore repeating patterns using everyday objects, natural materials, and classroom resources. Counting activities will include recognising numbers, counting groups of objects accurately, and beginning to understand one more and one less. Through games, songs, and practical activities, children will develop confidence in their number knowledge and problem-solving skills.
Phonics:
We are starting Phase 2 on our phonics program. The children will learn new sounds and harder to read words as well as read the ELS (Essential Letters and Sounds) weekly allocated books. They will also take home sound-related reading books. Please ensure these books are looked after and returned to school daily. We encourage you to read with your child and provide feedback in their reading diary.
Science
Our Science unit this term is Our Amazing Bodies. The children will learn about the different parts of the body and their functions, exploring how we use our senses to understand the world around us. They will take part in fun, hands-on activities such as listening walks, taste tests, and simple investigations to discover how their senses work. We will also talk about the importance of keeping our bodies healthy through exercise, rest, and eating well. This unit will help children appreciate how unique and special their bodies are, while sparking curiosity about themselves and others.PE:
PE sessions will be held every Thursday. The children will engage in activities that develop essential team play skills, ball skills, and physical coordination. Please ensure your child wears an appropriate PE kit on Thursdays.
Please ensure children have spare clothes in their bags if they have an accident.
General message:
Please ensure that your children complete their homework over the weekend so they can be collected by Thursday, as well as reading with a parent for ten minutes each day. Also, please ensure you bring spare clothes for your children in case of an accident.
