Year 6
Welcome to Summer 1! We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break. It’s hard to believe we are now in the final term of Year 6 – such an important and exciting time for the children. This half term will be a key period as we prepare for SATs. The children have already shown great effort and determination, and we are incredibly proud of how hard they have been working.
Year 6 SATs: Information for Parents and Carers
Key Stage 2 National Curriculum Assessments (commonly known as SATs).
We are incredibly proud of how hard the children have been working. Our main goal is to ensure they feel confident, prepared, and supported. These tests are simply a way to celebrate what they have learned during their time at primary school, but they do not measure all the wonderful things that make your child unique—like their kindness, creativity, or sporting talents!
The tests will take place over four days, from Monday 11th May to Thursday 14th May.

Booster Sessions:
To give our pupils an extra boost of confidence, we are running daily morning sessions at 7:45am in the lead-up to SATs week. These sessions are a fantastic opportunity for the children to sharpen their skills in a relaxed environment, and we ask that they arrive promptly and ready to engage so they can make the most of this valuable learning time.
English
This term in English, we will be reading 'Street Child' by Berlie Doherty, a gripping historical novel set in Victorian London that follows the journey of Jim Jarvis as he faces the harsh realities of workhouses and life on the streets. Through this text, we will explore themes of resilience, injustice and hope, using it to inspire thoughtful discussion and powerful writing.

Note: There is no formal SATs test for Writing These are assessed by the class teacher based on the work your child has produced throughout the year.
Guided Reading
As part of our preparation for SATs, Year 6 will be using CGP Reading Comprehension materials to develop their reading skills. The children will practise reading a range of texts, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry, while answering questions that focus on retrieval, inference, vocabulary and explanation.
These sessions will help pupils build confidence, improve reading stamina and become familiar with the style of questions they will encounter in the SATs reading test. We will also spend time discussing strategies for approaching questions and checking answers carefully.
Maths
This term in Maths, we will be revisiting and strengthening our understanding of key topics including measurement, algebra, ratio and geometry. We will focus on developing accuracy, reasoning and problem-solving skills to ensure we feel confident and fully prepared for the challenges ahead.
Alongside this, we will be completing SATs practice to strengthen our confidence, accuracy and reasoning skills across key areas of the curriculum. This will help us identify gaps, refine our strategies and ensure we feel fully prepared and self-assured for the assessments ahead.
Computing
This term in Computing, pupils will be learning about internet safety, focusing on how to use technology responsibly and protect themselves online.
Pshe
This term in PSHE, Year 6 will be focusing on the topic of Caring Friendships.
The children will explore what makes a positive and healthy friendship, including trust, respect, kindness, and support. We will discuss how to recognise the qualities of a good friend and reflect on how our actions can impact others.
PE
P.E lessons will be on Tuesday. Please ensure that your child comes to school wearing their P:E kit.

Ustadh Hajji loves sports and discipline! He’s always ready to help Year 6 achieve their goals. He has been working in year 6 for a number of years and is an asset to the class.
