Reception

Reception Summer 2

Literacy

This term, our literacy learning will be centered around the beloved story The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This engaging and well-loved book provides a rich foundation for a wide range of interactive, creative, and exploratory activities designed to develop children’s reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Children will engage in close reading and repeated retelling of the story to build a strong understanding of story sequencing and narrative structure.

Math's:

This term, children will explore key maths concepts including mass, volume and capacity, money, data, and word problems. They will compare heavy and light objects, measure liquids using different containers, and learn to recognise and use coins. Throughout the term, children will also develop problem-solving skills by working on age-appropriate word problems that encourage them to apply their mathematical knowledge to real-life situations. These activities aim to build a solid foundation for mathematical thinking and reasoning, supporting both practical understanding and numeracy skills.

Phonics:

We are starting Phase 5 on our phonics program. The children will learn new sounds and harder to read words as well as read the  ELS (Essential Letters and Sounds) weekly allocated books. They will also take home sound-related reading books. Please ensure these books are looked after and returned to school daily. We encourage you to read with your child and provide feedback in their reading diary.

Science

This term, our Reception students will learn all about materials. They will explore different types of materials such as wood, metal, plastic, fabric, and paper through hands-on activities and experiments. Children will investigate the properties of these materials—like texture, flexibility, and strength—and learn how materials are used in everyday objects. This topic will help develop their observational skills and encourage curiosity about the world around them.

PE:

PE sessions will be held every Thursday. The children will engage in activities that develop essential team play skills, ball skills, and physical coordination. Please ensure your child wears an appropriate PE kit on Thursdays.

General message:

Please ensure children have spare clothes in their bags if they have an accident.

Please ensure that your children complete their homework over the weekend so they can be collected on Monday, as well as reading with a parent for ten minutes each day.

If you have concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, or arrange a meeting after school.
