English

This term, Year 2 will be reading ‘Pattan’s Pumpkin’ by Chitra Soundar. This exciting and vibrantly illustrated picture book unfolds a traditional Irula flood story from Southern India. The story follows a humble farmers creativity of resourcefulness, compassion and harmony with nature. In our English lessons, we will be participating in a range of practical activities and writing methods to explore and deepen our understanding of different cultures, lifestyle and natural disasters. Year 2 will be writing in role, setting descriptions, free verse poetry, storytelling, newspaper reports and narrative (myths).

Phonics

This term, children will be working on Phase 5/ 5+ and learning about the rules of Spelling using a range of suffixes. We will also be learning new common exception words in Year 2. Please read with your child everyday for at least 5 minutes. Children are provided a book to take home every week and are required to access additional reading materials on Bugclub/ Oxford Owl. The more you practice with them, the better they will get and the easier learning will become for them!

Maths

This term, children will be exploring fractions, time and volume!

 

 

 

Science

In science, we are looking at ‘Habitats’. Year 2 will identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants. Children will explore their immediate local environments. They will identify local and global habitats and recognise, in simple terms, those which are similar in scale or diversity. They will also learn to recognise how differences between places close to each other result in a different range of plants and animals being found.

History

In History, we will be looking at ‘Technological Change’ to study the development of communication from the past to the present. Children will explore how communication has evolved has overtime and the impact various inventions have had on the quality of communication from the past to the present, for example, Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Typewriters, Telephones and Social Media.

Art

In Art, we will be exploring a range of craft materials to create a shoebox diorama. Children will have the opportunity to learn about the different types of weaving, how to print using Styrofoam and assemble wired jewellery to create a woodland themed shoebox diorama.

 

Computing

In computing, we will be using digital art to create fun and exciting interactive digital books. We will be recreating different stories that we already know, replacing characters and making up our own narratives. Year 2 will explore different features on digital art to create book covers, add speech, text and illustrations to accompany their stories.

Islamic Studies and Arabic

Year 2 will be taught Islamic Studies by Ustadh Kasujja three times a week. The children will learn about the importance of different Islamic values, how best to apply these in everyday life, Muslim identity in addition to learning and practicing new Surahs.

PE

PE is on Thursday with the PE Coach. Please ensure that your child remembers their correct PE kit every Thursday.

HOMEWORK

Homework will be set every Friday and collected on Tuesday. Homework will consist of Maths, English and Spellings. Children will also be expected to complete homework on platforms such as Google Classroom, IXL, Purple Mash and Bug Club. Your child will be sent home with a reading book every week. Please encourage children to read the book more than once to help familiariase themeselves with the vocabulary used and secure their phonetical knowledge, reading and comprehension.
