What we are learning this Year/Term
English
In English we will be reading ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ by Lynne Cherry. During our lessons this term we are using a range of writing methods to develop and extend our understanding of the story. We will be writing poems, a balanced argument, writing the next part of the story and many more exciting lessons.
Guided Reading
In Year 3 we will be reading ‘Mr Stink’ by David Walliams. Through learning new vocabulary, making predictions about the story, retrieving information and summarising what they have read, we will be developing their understanding of the text being read.
It is essential that your child also reads for at least 10 minutes everyday. Your child has a reading record and a book that they take home. Please help your child with reading and filling our their reading record. We encourage children to read a wide range of books. Children are also given a book on the online library: Bug Club. Children can read a book online and improve their progress. Great readers make great learners.
Maths
We will be looking at and developing children’s understanding of angles, lines and shapes and perimeter. We will be using a variety of methods to help consolidate children’s learning and also use concrete materials to help with visualising the methods. Please ensure children continue practising their times tables at home to help consolidate their learning. They can use the timetables website which they have all been given logins to.
Computing
In computing children will be looking at book creator and writing their own stories and adding images and sound.
Science
In Science, Year 3 will be looking at parts of plants. In this unit children will have learned about the parts of flowering plants. Children will have identified and named the basic parts of flowering plants and recognised and described the functions of these parts, including the function of the flower in the plant life cycle. Children will have investigated the function of roots, stems, leaves and flowers and will have researched methods of seed dispersal. In addition, children will have learned about the process of pollination. They will also have investigated the way in which water is transported within plants and they will have constructed a terrarium to demonstrate how plants recycle water in a closed system.
Topic
Year 3 will be looking at how we can compare the Mediterranean to the UK. We will be exploring a variety of geographical skills such as locating countries and cities, reading the points of a compass and investigating the similarities and differences of physical and human geography between a region in the UK and a region in the mediterranean.
