ENGLISH
In Summer 2, we will be reading Alex Rider: Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz. This thrilling novel launches us into the high-stakes world of teenage spy Alex Rider as he uncovers dangerous secrets and faces unexpected challenges. Students will explore themes such as courage, loyalty, and resilience, while examining how the author builds suspense and action through fast-paced storytelling. As we follow Alex’s journey, we will delve into character development, plot structure, and the use of language to create tension and excitement. Throughout the term, we will continue to expand our vocabulary, consider the intended audience, and explore how different narrative techniques and writing styles bring the story to life.
GUIDED READING
This term’s Guided Reading lessons will focus on Boy in the Tower by Polly Ho-Yen. This powerful and thought-provoking novel follows the story of Ade, a young boy navigating life in a city under threat from mysterious and deadly plants known as the Bluchers. As we uncover the challenges Ade faces, students will explore themes such as resilience, isolation, community, and hope. Throughout our lessons, we will work on retrieval and inference skills, summarise key events, and make thoughtful predictions about character choices and plot developments. We will also continue to improve reading fluency through reading aloud and build vocabulary to deepen our understanding of the text.
Children should be reading at home for at least 10 minutes every day and are given a book to read. Please ensure that children update their reading records daily. Children can also access their online library through Bug Club. Details to login are on their reading records.
MATHS
This term, Year 5 will be focusing on negative numbers, ratios, algebra, graphs, and averages. Students will learn how to work confidently with negative numbers in different contexts, explore the concept of ratio to compare quantities, and begin to understand basic algebra by using simple formulas and solving missing number problems. They will also interpret and construct different types of graphs and learn how to calculate averages, including the mean. Our lessons will continue to highlight real-life applications and problem-solving strategies, helping pupils to apply their learning in meaningful ways. Through engaging activities and investigations, students will build confidence and deepen their understanding of these important mathematical concepts.
COMPUTING
In Summer 2, Year 5 will dive into the exciting world of game development using the 2DIY tool on Purple Mash. Pupils will have the opportunity to design and create their own digital games, developing important skills in creativity, logic, and digital design. Using video tutorials for guidance, students will learn how to customise their games by editing characters, setting challenges, and even creating multiple levels. Throughout the term, students will gain a deeper understanding of game mechanics, user interaction, and the design process, all while applying their computational thinking in a fun and engaging way.
SCIENCE
This term in Year 5, we will be focusing on materials and their properties, with particular attention to concepts such as conductivity, insulation, and the uses of different materials. Students will investigate how materials behave and why they are chosen for specific purposes based on their properties—such as whether they conduct heat or electricity, or whether they act as insulators. Through practical experiments, observations, and hands-on activities, pupils will test and compare a range of materials, developing their understanding of key scientific ideas. This unit will also strengthen their skills in planning investigations, making predictions, recording results, and drawing conclusions based on evidence.
TOPIC
This term in Year 5, we will be focusing on North America, exploring the diverse physical and human geography of this vast continent. Students will investigate the different countries within North America, key physical features such as mountain ranges, rivers, and climate zones, as well as major cities and landmarks. They will also learn about economic activities, natural resources, and cultural diversity across the region. Through engaging map work, research tasks, and comparisons with other parts of the world, pupils will develop their geographical knowledge and enquiry skills, gaining a broader understanding of how geography influences the lives of people across North America.
ART
his term in Year 5, the focus will be on sculpture, giving students the opportunity to explore three-dimensional art and develop their creativity through hands-on work. Pupils will investigate different sculpting techniques and materials—such as clay, wire, and recycled objects—while studying the work of famous sculptors for inspiration. They will experiment with form, texture, and structure, learning how to shape and join materials to bring their artistic ideas to life. Throughout the unit, students will design, create, and evaluate their own sculptures, developing both their technical skills and their understanding of how sculpture can be used to express ideas and emotions.
PE
P.E. will be on Tuesdays. Please ensure that your child comes to school wearing their P:E kit on that day.
