Year 5

 ENGLISH

In Summer 1, we will be reading Varmints by Helen Ward and My Big Mouth by Steven Camden. These engaging books will take us on two very different journeys—one exploring a world threatened by change and the other diving into the ups and downs of teenage life. Students will explore important themes such as the environment, identity, and self-expression, while looking at how the characters face challenges and grow. Through these stories, we will delve into rich language, character development, and the use of illustrations and narrative voice. Throughout the term, we will work on expanding our vocabulary, thinking about who the author is writing for, and learning how different writing styles and techniques are used to bring the stories to life.

GUIDED READING

This term’s Guided Reading lessons will focus on Holes by Louis Sachar. This gripping and cleverly structured novel will take students on a journey filled with mystery, humour, and unexpected twists. As we follow the story of Stanley Yelnats and the unusual events at Camp Green Lake, students will explore themes of friendship, justice, and fate. Throughout our lessons, we will engage with retrieval and inference questions, summarise key events, and make predictions about the characters' actions and motivations. We will also continue to develop reading fluency through reading aloud and build vocabulary to deepen understanding of the text.

Children should be reading at home for at least 10 minutes every day and are given a book to read. Please ensure that children update their reading records daily. Children can also access their online library through Bug Club. Details to login are on their reading records.

MATHS

This term, Year 5 will focus on measurement, including area, perimeter, and volume, as well as Roman numerals. Students will learn how to calculate the area and perimeter of various shapes and explore the concept of volume through practical and visual methods. They will also deepen their understanding of Roman numerals and how they are used in historical and modern contexts. Our lessons will emphasise real-life applications and problem-solving strategies to help students apply their learning with confidence. Through interactive activities and hands-on investigations, pupils will build a strong foundation in these key mathematical areas, developing both their skills and enjoyment of the subject.

COMPUTING

In Summer 1, Year 5 Computing will focus on JavaScript and creating interactive programs using functions. Students will be introduced to the basics of coding with JavaScript, learning how to write and organise code using functions to make their programs more efficient and dynamic. Through engaging and hands-on lessons, they will explore how to create interactive elements, respond to user input, and build simple yet powerful programs. This unit will encourage logical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving as students see their code come to life. By the end of the term, they will have developed a solid understanding of how functions work and how they can be used to structure interactive digital projects.

SCIENCE

This term in Year 5, we will focus on life cycles and the processes of growth and reproduction in living things. Students will explore the life cycles of a variety of animals, including mammals, amphibians, insects, and birds, comparing similarities and differences across species. They will also learn about the stages of human development and the role of reproduction in the continuation of life. Through hands-on investigations, observations, and interactive lessons, children will gain a deeper understanding of how living things grow, change, and reproduce, developing their scientific enquiry skills along the way.

TOPIC

This term in Geography, Year 5 will focus on natural resources and microclimates, with an emphasis on fieldwork and real-world investigation. Students will explore different types of natural resources—such as water, fossil fuels, and renewable energy—understanding their importance and how they are used around the world. They will also investigate microclimates by observing and recording weather patterns in different local environments, comparing how factors like buildings, vegetation, and open spaces can affect temperature, wind, and rainfall. Through hands-on fieldwork and engaging lessons, children will develop their geographical enquiry skills and gain a deeper understanding of how natural elements shape the world around us.

DT

This term in DT, Year 5 will be focusing on food technology, specifically designing and making a healthy soup. Students will explore the full design process—researching ingredients, planning recipes, and preparing their own soup using seasonal vegetables. They will learn about nutrition, food hygiene, and safe preparation techniques while developing practical cooking skills. As part of the project, students will taste and evaluate different soups, thinking about flavour, texture, and presentation. This hands-on unit encourages creativity, independence, and an understanding of how to make healthy food choices, giving students a valuable insight into the importance of cooking and nutrition in everyday life.

PSHE

In PSHE, we will be focusing on caring and respectful relationships. Pupils will learn about the qualities of a good friend, recognise the signs of unhealthy friendships, and understand how to respond to judgement in a positive way. They will also explore identity and reflect on what makes them unique.

Children will develop their understanding of respect, including respecting others and authority, and create a respect checklist to guide their behaviour. They will also learn about stereotypes, including gender stereotypes, and how to challenge them. Links will be made to Islamic teachings about respect, equality and good character.
