Year 3

Assalamu’Alaikum Year 3

Welcome to Autumn 1

Welcome to Year 3! This year we are building on our skills, exploring new ideas and developing our independence as learners. From exciting stories and creative writing to challenging maths and fascinating science, Year 3 will Insha'ALLAH be full of opportunities to grow, discover and achieve together. Please do not hesitate to contact me or speak to me if you have any questions.

What we are learning this term.....

English

In English we will be reading ‘The Tin Forest’ by Helen Ward and Wayne Anderson. During our lessons this term we will explore the text through a range of exciting writing outcomes to develop and extend our understanding of the story. We will be doing some poetry, diary entries, descriptive and creative writing. These activities will help develop children's imagination, vocabulary and confidence in writing for different purposes.

Guided Reading

In Year 3 we will be reading ‘Krindlekrax’ by Philip Ridley. Through learning new vocabulary, making predictions about the story, retrieving information and summarising what they have read, we will be developing their understanding of the text being read.

It is essential that your child also reads for at least 10 minutes everyday. Your child has a reading record and a book that they take home. Please help your child with reading and filling our their reading record. We encourage children to read a wide range of books. Children are also given a book on the online library: Bug Club. Children can read a book online and improve their progress. Great readers make great learners.

Maths

We will be looking at place value and the key skills of addition and subtraction. We will be using a variety of methods to help consolidate children’s learning and also use concrete materials to help with visualising the methods. Please ensure children continue practising their times tables at home to help consolidate their learning. They can use the timetables website which they have all been given logins to.

Computing

In computing children will be looking at the importance of online safety and how to stay safe online. They will also be learning how to use Google Docs effectively.

Science

In Science, our topic is Movement and Feeding. The children will learn about the role of skeletons and muscles in humans and how they help with movement, support and protection. They will also explore the importance of nutrition and a balanced diet, comparing what humans needs to stay healthy with the diets of other animals. Through investigations, experiments and hands-on activities, the children will develop their scientific enquiry skills, including asking questions, making observations and drawing conclusions.

History

In History, we are travelling back in time to explore life in the Stone Age through to the Iron Age. The children will investigate how people lived, what tools they used and how life changed during those important periods.

PE

P.E. will be on Tuesdays. Please ensure that your child has the correct P.E. kit and suitable footwear.

Art/DT

This term Year 3 will be doing Textiles. The children will be developing their sewing skills by designing and making their own aprons. This project will encourage creativity, resilience and practical skills.
