ENGLISH
In Autumn 1, we will be reading The Journey by Francesca Sanna. This beautifully illustrated children’s book explores the themes of migration and the strength of community in difficult times. The story follows a family's journey as they leave their home in search of safety and a better future, facing numerous challenges along the way. Following this, we will dive into A Boy and a Bear in a Boat by Dave Shelton, a whimsical and thought-provoking adventure about a boy and a bear navigating their way across an unpredictable sea. This term, children will focus on higher-level vocabulary, identifying the audience, and analysing the purpose of the writing, using these engaging stories as a foundation for their learning.
GUIDED READING
This term's Guided Reading lessons will focus on Oranges in No Man's Land by Elizabeth Laird, a compelling and poignant novel that delves into themes of courage, resilience, and hope amidst conflict. The story follows a young girl named Ayesha who lives in a war-torn city and embarks on a brave journey to find oranges for her sick grandmother. Throughout our lessons, we will be engaging with retrieval and inference questions based on the text, summarising key events, and making predictions about Ayesha’s journey. We will also work on improving the children's fluency by reading passages aloud. Each week, we will introduce new vocabulary to enhance comprehension and deepen their understanding of the novel’s impactful themes.
Children should be reading at home for at least 10 minutes every day and are given a book to read. Please ensure that children update their reading records daily. Children can also access their online library through Bug Club. Details to login are on their reading records.
MATHS
This term, we will strengthen our understanding of place value, working with larger numbers and decimals to build a solid mathematical foundation. We will also focus on developing efficient addition and subtraction strategies to solve more complex problems with confidence and accuracy. In multiplication and division, students will explore a range of techniques and apply their skills to real-world situations and multi-step challenges. Through hands-on activities, interactive learning, and rich problem-solving tasks, we aim to ignite a love for mathematics and ensure every student thrives.
COMPUTING
In Year 5 computing, children will embark on an exciting journey into the world of computer science, where they will begin mastering the principles of Java, one of the most widely used and versatile programming languages. Through structured lessons, students will explore the basics of coding, such as understanding variables, loops, and conditional statements, while learning how to solve problems and create simple programs. Hands-on coding exercises will encourage creativity and logical thinking, as students develop their own small projects, such as interactive games or digital animations. By building a strong foundation in Java programming, we aim to equip our Year 5 children with the skills and confidence needed to navigate and succeed in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
SCIENCE
This term in Year 5, we will be diving into the captivating topic of separating mixtures in science! Children will explore different methods such as filtration, evaporation, sieving, and dissolving to understand how mixtures can be separated into their original components. Through hands-on experiments and interactive learning experiences, students will develop a deeper understanding of concepts like solutions, solubility, and reversible changes. Our engaging discussions and investigations will spark curiosity as we unravel the science behind separating mixtures in everyday life, making connections to the world around us.
TOPIC
This term in history, Year 5 children will explore the rich and influential Islamic civilisation, delving into its remarkable achievements in science, mathematics, art, and culture. Through engaging lessons, students will investigate how Islamic scholars preserved and advanced knowledge during the Golden Age of Islam, influencing societies across Europe, Africa, and Asia. They will also learn about the key historical figures, trade routes, and technological innovations that shaped this civilisation. By examining primary sources, maps, and artefacts, our young historians will gain a deeper understanding of the contributions of Islamic civilisation to the world, fostering an appreciation for its lasting legacy and impact on global history.
ART
This term in Art, we will explore the rich world of Islamic art and calligraphy. Students will learn about the history and cultural significance of Islamic patterns, geometric designs, and beautiful calligraphic scripts. They will develop their skills by experimenting with different styles and techniques, creating their own pieces inspired by traditional Islamic art. Through hands-on activities, creative exploration, and focused practice, we aim to deepen cultural understanding, build artistic confidence, and help every student express themselves with pride.
