Our school was delighted to welcome the Mayor  of Lambeth (Mayor Councillor Paul Valentine ) and Councillor Linda Bray to Iqra VA Primary School for the inauguration of our newly elected School Councillors for 2026-2027

The children were excited to meet the Mayor, learn about his role and discover some of the projects he is working on to support our local community. The visit provided a valuable opportunity for our pupils to learn about local democracy, leadership and how decisions can make a difference to the lives of children, young people and families.

The highlights of the visit was listening to the newly appointed School Councillors acceptance speeches, pinning of the school Council Badge and hearing their  Pledge . Followed by an engaging question-and-answer session, during which our pupils  asked thoughtful questions, including what inspired the Mayor to become Mayor, the best part of his role, the challenges facing children and young people, and how he hopes to improve our borough in the years ahead. The children also explored the importance of helping families facing the cost of living challenges and heard advice about becoming future leaders.

The session was a wonderful example of pupil voice in action, encouraging our children to think about the issues that matter to them and how they can contribute positively to their school and wider community.

We are incredibly proud of our new School Councillors as they begin their journey representing their peers, sharing ideas and helping to make our school an even better place. The visit inspired our pupils to recognise that every voice matters and that leadership begins with listening, caring and taking action.

We would like to thank the Mayor for taking the time to visit Iqra VA Primary School and for making the inauguration such a memorable and inspiring occasion.

Congratulations to our newly inaugurated School Councillors! We look forward to seeing the positive contributions they will make throughout the year.
